Recently, I had the joy of photographing a stunning elopement that showcased some of the park’s most iconic locations: Bear Lake, Storm Pass, and the Moraine Valley. Along the way, we also uncovered one of my best-kept secrets—how to find a quiet, private ceremony spot in the middle of Colorado’s busiest season.

To avoid crowds and soak in the peaceful beauty of the park, I always recommend scheduling your ceremony and portraits either at sunrise or sunset.


For this couple, we planned a late afternoon into evening timeline, which gave us that soft golden light that the Rockies are famous for. Not only did it highlight the mountain peaks, but it also created a warm, romantic atmosphere for their ceremony and portraits.






EXPLORING MULTIPLE LOCATIONS FOR A VARIETY OF SCENERY



One of the best parts about eloping in Rocky Mountain National Park is that you don’t have to choose just one view—you can experience several landscapes in a single day. That’s exactly what we did:


Bear Lake – We started at this iconic alpine lake, surrounded by towering pines and jaw-dropping mountain reflections. It was the perfect spot for some serene, intimate portraits before the ceremony.


Storm Pass – From there, we wandered to Storm Pass, a less-traveled trail that gave us sweeping views and more privacy for quiet moments together.


Moraine Valley – Finally, we ended in the Moraine Valley, where wide-open meadows stretched out to meet the mountain peaks. The sun dipped low, turning the whole valley golden—it felt like stepping into a painting.

Here’s the secret: even in the busy summer months, it’s possible to find privacy. The key is knowing the park’s layout and the flow of visitors.


When we arrived at Bear Lake, we experienced the usual groups of hikers and tourists—but by timing our visit strategically, we had pockets of quiet moments for portraits. For their actual ceremony, however, we wanted somewhere private and serene. Instead of choosing one of the most popular overlooks, I guided the couple to a tucked-away meadow just off the beaten path.


There, surrounded only by nature, they exchanged vows without distraction. It was peaceful, intimate, and everything they imagined when planning their Colorado elopement.


 

 

TIPS FOR PLANNING YOUR OWN RMNP ELOPEMENT

Apply for a wedding permit early. RMNP requires a permit for ceremonies, and they go quickly—especially during summer and fall.

Plan for sunrise or sunset. Not only is the light dreamy, but you’ll also avoid most of the crowds.

Explore multiple locations. Don’t limit yourself to one spot—each corner of the park has something unique to offer.

Hire an experienced elopement photographer. Having someone who knows the park well (and all the secret quiet spots!) makes all the difference.

Be prepared for mountain weather. Even in summer, bring layers—you never know when the Rockies will surprise you.
