There’s nothing quite like the thrill of eloping in the great outdoors, surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of nature. This past July, I had the joy of capturing an elopement at Upper Beaver Meadows in Rocky Mountain National Park, and it was a day filled with love, adventure, and a little bit of unexpected weather. If you’re dreaming of saying “I do” in a stunning natural setting, read on for a glimpse into this magical day, along with some tips for planning your own elopement in a national park.

A Day of Exploration and Love
The couple and I started our adventure with a pre-ceremony wander through some of Rocky Mountain National Park’s most iconic spots. Our first stop was 3M Curve, a location known for its sweeping vistas of the valley. With the mountains standing majestically in the distance, it’s a place that instantly takes your breath away. The couple couldn’t have looked happier, sharing sweet moments as they took in the incredible scenery. The photos from this location perfectly capture the awe and excitement of their big day.
From there, we made our way to Moraine Park, a picturesque meadow bursting with wildflowers. The vibrant colors of the flowers, combined with the towering mountains in the background, created a scene straight out of a fairytale. We found a spot where the couple was perfectly framed by the surrounding landscape, and it was truly magical. Their love seemed to blend seamlessly with the natural beauty around them, making for some unforgettable shots.
Our final pre-ceremony destination was a serene campground by the river on Old Fall River Road. The gentle sound of the river provided a peaceful backdrop as the couple shared some quiet moments together. They even kicked off their shoes and waded into the water, laughing and enjoying the cool mountain stream. It was a playful, carefree moment that perfectly reflected their adventurous spirit.

An Intimate Ceremony at Upper Beaver Meadows
With our hearts full from exploring the park, we headed to Upper Beaver Meadows for the ceremony. This hidden gem within the park offers a sense of seclusion and intimacy, making it an ideal spot for a small, personal ceremony. Surrounded by their closest family and friends, the couple exchanged vows in a heartfelt ceremony that included a beautiful ring-warming ritual. Each guest took a moment to hold the rings and offer their best wishes, adding a deeply personal touch to the day.
As the couple shared their vows, the sky began to darken, hinting at a change in the weather. But nothing could dampen the joy of the day. After sealing their promises with a kiss, we took some time for family photos, capturing the love and connection that filled the meadow.
Just as we finished up, a light rain began to fall. Instead of letting the weather get in the way, the couple embraced the moment, grabbing a clear umbrella and dancing in the rain. It was a spontaneous, joyful moment that perfectly captured the spirit of their day. The photos of them laughing and twirling under the umbrella are some of my favorites—they’re a testament to the couple’s ability to find beauty and joy in every moment.

Tips for Eloping in a National Park
If you’re inspired by this story and are considering an elopement in a national park, here are some tips to help you plan your perfect day:
1. Choose the Right Location: National parks offer a variety of stunning locations, each with its own unique beauty. Whether you’re drawn to sweeping vistas, serene meadows, or hidden river spots, take the time to explore the park and choose a location that resonates with you as a couple.
2. Plan for the Weather: Weather in national parks, especially in the mountains, can be unpredictable. Be prepared for anything—bring layers, have an umbrella handy, and most importantly, embrace whatever comes your way. Sometimes, the unexpected can lead to the most memorable moments.
3. Get the Necessary Permits: Most national parks, including Rocky Mountain National Park, require a permit for weddings and elopements. Make sure to apply for your permit well in advance and familiarize yourself with the park’s regulations to ensure a smooth experience.
4. Consider Your Guests: If you’re inviting guests, think about accessibility and comfort. Some locations may require a bit of a hike, so choose a spot that’s easy for everyone to reach, or be prepared to assist those who might need a little extra help.
5. Work with Experienced Vendors: When eloping in a national park, it’s important to work with vendors who are familiar with the area. From photographers to officiants, having a team that knows the park well can help you navigate the logistics and make the most of your day.
6. Leave No Trace: Respect the natural beauty of the park by following Leave No Trace principles. Stay on designated trails, pack out all trash, and be mindful of the environment. This ensures that the park remains beautiful for future couples and visitors.
